June 1st

The first stop on our trek to Mackinac Island was at Hartwick Pines State Park. Here the kids began the process of completing their assignment folder by answering questions related to the movie and the sights they saw. While we were here we walked on the "Old-Growth Trail" to a logging museum, past a chapel, and finally to the lunch area where we ate our sack lunches before heading back on to the bus for the rest of our drive.

	After lunch Tyler and most of the other kids enjoyed a brief break in the days activities by playing on the playground.

The next stop on our trek north was in Mackinaw City at Fort Michilimackinac. Once again the kids were to work on their assignments, but here we had a little more time to enjoy the surroundings. Before entering the fort, we were able to walk along the beach on the east side of the Mackinac Bridge. After entering, we watched a movie about the history of the fort while in the visitors center. Inside the fort we witnessed a reenactment of soldiers firing their rifles as well as the cannon that sits just outside the forts walls.
