Camper Guests

Home Up

So, I finally managed to pull the camper up to get it prepped for our first trip of the year. Everything looks like it is still in tact after surviving another winter in the yard, but something actually sounds amiss. Tara, the kids, and I can all hear noises coming from under the rear... sounds like scratching and scurrying and lots of vocalization - could be chirping or screeching. It is getting late today, and these guests have obviously been there for a while, so a couple of extra nights isn't going to hurt anything.

Finally, on July 3rd, the time comes to do some investigating. Fully expecting there to be mice living in the trailer (I have poison placed throughout the trailer, but because it is parked near a field I am surprised we haven't had them in our trailer yet) I grabbed my tools, a shovel, and Tyler. Tyler was holding the shovel, prepared to whack as many mice as he could, as I opened up the end of the undercarriage. After removing the first piece of siding I found a lot of straw, but I really couldn't see anything. I could still hear the noises though, so a flashlight was in order. Peering deep into the underside of the camper revealed exactly what our guests were... four baby birds, desperately clinging to their home. I was unable to convince them to come out the back of the camper, and nothing I had was long enough to reach them, so I had to remove a piece of the siding behind the rear wheels. Armed with small rakes, Tara & I were able to pull out the nesting material as well as each of the four birds. We put them in the flowerbed beside our house, as they were able to walk around quite well. Flying was out of the question for them at this point.

Although I saw one of them the day after their eviction, I could still hear others as well. I haven't gone looking for them since, but hopefully they are ok. I didn't really want to harm any of them, but I also needed to have use of my camper, so in a way it was them or me! By the way, if anyone can tell me what kind of birds they are, I would be interested in knowing. I really don't have a clue...
