After going 0-2-1 in the three tournament games, the Lapeer
Storm team found themselves playing in the consolation game of the
Spartans Cup Tournament. Their opponent was the '05 Bowling Green
team that gave them their tie in the second game of the tournament.
The Storm players were determined to not end the tournament with a
loss, and they came out firing on all cylinders. They grabbed the
early 1-0 lead with a goal three minutes into the game. A second
goal four minutes later gave them their second 2-0 lead of the
tournament, both against the Bowling Green team. A third goal
quickly followed, coming 15 seconds later, opening up the lead to
3-0. That score would hole into the second period.
The vast majority of the second was uneventful but entertaining.
The two teams traded chances, but neither could break the ice and
get a goal until Bowling Green did with two minutes remaining. A
second goal within 50 seconds drew them to within a single goal. The
Storm team took the punch and kept attacking, scoring a goal of
their own 16 seconds later to give them a 4-2 lead heading into the
final period of action.
Three and half minutes into the period tings got interesting once
again as the Bowling Green team scored another goal to make it a 4-3
game. The Storm held off the surge until midway through the period,
when they gave up another goal to tie things up at 4 each.
Unfortunately for the Storm team that was it for the scoring,
resulting in a second tie for the tournament.
Things got worse after the game, as the coaches informed the
parents and players that they didn't have enough commitment to the
team to continue, and that this game would be their last. This
announcement wasn't 100% out of the blue, but it was still enough of
a shock to cause a lot of tears from both young and old Storm family
members. Although this is the end of the team, it isn't the end of
the Storm family. There have been lifelong friendships made through
this journey - friendships that will carry on in the future. |
