|Tonight's contest between the Novi FireCats and Ann Arbor Wolves
was a rematch of the first game of the season, as the FireCats
looked to equal the success from the 7-6 victory in that game.
Things did not get off to a good start for the FireCats, however, as
they fell behind less than two minutes after the opening puck drop.
It took a while, but the FireCats managed to even things up at a
goal apiece midway through the period at 1-1, and the two teams
would go into the first intermission with this score.
got the jump in the second period, scoring less than 30 seconds in
to grab a 2-1 lead. They did their best to hold that lead, but a
goal just past the midway point by the Wolves knotted things up once
again, and like the first period that score would stand until
It was the Wolves who broke through first in the third, scoring
the go-ahead goal with just over 8 minutes remaining. Things were
looking bleak as penalties started to pile up for the FireCats, but
they didn't give up. They kept attacking, and finally scored to tie
the game once more with two and half minutes to go. It was beginning
to look like the game would end in a tie, but a somewhat
controversial goal by the Wolves with 34 seconds remaining gave them
the lead (I say controversial because it was pretty clear to
everyone in the arena that the FireCats goalie had the puck covered
with his glove, but the whistle didn't blow and the Wolves players
kept poking at the puck, eventually knocking it free, and then into
the net). With little time remaining, the FireCats weren't able to
tie things up one last time, and wound up falling by a score of 4-3.
