This was the first of two junior varsity games to be played
today, both against the Wiregrass Bulls. After playing to a tie in
last night's opening JV game, the Ice Sharks were ready to get in
the "W" column today... The game started out with the ice tilted
in favor of the Riverview squad. They got the first three shots on
goal, including one from Drew, before the Bulls got their first
shot. That would also turn out to be the final shot for the
Wiregrass team this period, as the Ice Sharks would dominate the
puck over the remainder of the time. Late in the period they would
convert, on their 6th shot of the game, on a nice pass across the
rink that was tapped in for a 1-0 lead. Moments later, they would
score again on a nice rush to the net that resulted in a 2-0 lead
that would last until the first intermission. They did get a power
play opportunity to end the period, but only managed one shot and
were unable to convert.
The second period was a lot like the first, as the Riverview
squad dominated the puck. A series of Wiregrass penalties gave the
Ice Sharks plenty of time on the power play, which helped their
cause. Five and a half minutes in, the Ice Sharks finally broke
through once again, this time on their second power play of the
period. A mad scramble in front of the Wiregrass goal led to a lot
of whacking at the puck, and one of the shots finally found the back
of the net, giving Riverview a 3-0 lead. It took a little over four
minutes, but Riverview once again found themselves on the
scoreboard, this time on an even-strength goal that came from a nice
pass from the right circle that was redirected in to the backside of
an empty net for a 4-0 lead. Riverview potted one more goal before
the end of the period, this one with less than 30 seconds left in
the period. The goal resulted from a similar opportunity as above,
with a pass from the right circle going to the other side of the
net, which Drew was able to corral and tuck in to the corner of the
goal for a 5-0 lead. Unfortunately the shutout opportunity ended
with just 13 seconds left, as a Wiregrass shot trickled through the
Riverview five-hole and barely over the line for their first goal of
the game. The period would come to a close with the score 5-1 in
favor of the Ice Sharks.
The third period was much more even, with Wiregrass holding the
edge in shots on goal. They would score on their first shot of the
period, just 40 seconds in thanks to a pass from the left side that
they were able to tap in for a 5-2 score. Thankfully that would be
it for the Wiregrass scoring, though the Ice Sharks wouldn't find
the back of the net either. The 5-2 final score would give the
Riverview team their first victory of the season. Way to go Ice
Sharks! |
